Student answer (Band 6.5)
Language is the main source of expressing our thoughts and creating meanings. However, speaking in foreign language in a foreign country may create serious social and practical problems. This essay agrees that people may face cultural misunderstanding as well as employment barriers when they speak in foreign language.
The meaning and expression of different languages are distinctive from one another. If people try to make jokes from the perspective of their own language, the meaning can be changed when it is translated to the foreign language. As a result people might be misunderstood by others. For instance, in some culture speaking in high tone may be considered as normal behavior, but in other culture it can be considered as mannerless and unaccepted behavior. Therefore, the expression or the way of speaking can lead a misunderstanding.
Speaking in foreign language may create practical problems as well, such as employment constraints. In any foreign country, employability requires enough language fluency. Especially, when people want to apply for a job, they must be fluent in the specific language of the country. Otherwise, it is very difficult to get access in the job sectors. For example, students from different country learn Japanese language before going to Japan so that they can get part time job easily. Therefore, without having language fluency people may face unemployment problems.
In conclusion, this essay supports the statement that speaking in a foreign language in foreign country can cause serious social and practical problems as it may create misinterpretation among people as well as unemployment problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that living in a foreign-language environment can bring social and practical difficulties. Both sides of the prompt are addressed, with cultural misunderstanding discussed socially and employment barriers practically. The examples about differences in tone and Japanese learners seeking part-time work are relevant. However, the social point is explained more generally than specifically: the joke example is introduced but not developed, and the tone example would benefit from a clearer link to a real consequence, such as conflict or exclusion. The employment paragraph is more fully explained, though it focuses mainly on getting a job. More precise development of how these problems affect daily life would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs each develop one type of problem, and the conclusion restates the position. The progression from social misunderstanding to employment difficulty is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “For instance,” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas, and the examples are placed appropriately. Some transitions are slightly repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Therefore,” and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the two strands together. You could improve flow by varying transitions and using clearer references between claims and examples, while keeping the current logical paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “cultural misunderstanding,” “employment constraints,” “language fluency,” and “misinterpretation.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “creating meanings,” “mannerless,” “get access in the job sectors,” and “unemployment problems.” There is also repetition of “foreign language” and “problems,” which limits flexibility. Aim to use more natural combinations and precise terms—for example, describe a “language barrier” or “difficulty entering the labour market.” Greater control of collocation and more varied wording would strengthen the vocabulary without requiring unnecessarily complex words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If people try to make jokes… the meaning can be changed” and a subordinate clause beginning “when people want to apply for a job.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the errors do not generally obstruct understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, especially with articles, plurals, and prepositions: “in foreign language” needs an article or plural form, “in some culture” should be plural, and “access in the job sectors” has an incorrect preposition. The opening sentence also has an awkward structure around “Language is the main source…”. Review article use and sentence patterns, and aim for more consistently accurate complex sentences.
