Student answer (Band 6.0)

Residing in a country where you have to speak a different language can cause significant social and practical problems. I strongly agree with this view because this may lead to discrimination in all spheres of life.

To begin with, staying in a country where communication is a challenge can lead to isolation of an individual. An individual may develop low self esteem and thus decide not to interact with others. For example, a student who has moved to another country may experience loneliness if the learner does not use to same language as their roommates. This becomes a barrier and the leaarner may have difficulties in making friends. As a result, the student may miss out on important connections such as getting part time job which could have helped them pay their bills.

Additionally, learning a foreign language can be challenging if one has other responsibilities to fulfil. This may delay there progress in climbing a career ladder. For instance, a parent who needs to strike a balance between work and life. This parent would want to successfully progress in their job but if the jobs needs them to speak a foreign language, it will take more time for them to get that promotion. As a result, the individual may have a life caught in a rat-race which can ultimately be stressful and draining.

In conclusion, although different countries speak different languages, states should have one common language in all countries to act as an equaliser to all people living in that nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly agree that living in a foreign-language environment can create serious difficulties. The two main points—social isolation and slower career progress—are relevant, and the student and parent examples help illustrate them. However, the practical problems are less fully explained than the social ones, and the career example would benefit from clearer detail about how language barriers affect work. The conclusion introduces a proposal for one common language, which is not fully connected to the reasons developed in the essay. The response is 243 words, seven words below the 250-word minimum; the nine words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop the practical aspect and link the conclusion more directly to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from social isolation to career difficulties is logical, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Additionally” and “As a result” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. Some cohesion is mechanical, however, and repeated references to “an individual” and “this parent” make the writing less fluid. In the second body paragraph, the example begins as a sentence fragment (“For instance, a parent who needs to strike a balance between work and life”), interrupting the flow of the explanation. The conclusion also shifts to a new policy suggestion rather than synthesising the preceding points. Connect examples more smoothly and use clearer referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “isolation,” “barrier,” “career ladder,” “promotion” and “stressful and draining.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more expressive language such as “caught in a rat-race” show some flexibility. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “does not use to same language” is unclear, “the jobs needs them” has an unsuitable word form and agreement, and “life caught in a rat-race” is not a natural collocation. The spelling error “leaarner” also detracts from accuracy. Aim for more natural phrasing, such as “does not speak the same language” and “career progression,” and proofread carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if the learner…”) and cause-and-effect sentences (“As a result…”). Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “does not use to same language” has an incorrect verb construction and missing article, while “a parent who needs to strike a balance…” is a fragment rather than a complete example sentence. There are also errors in “there progress” and “the jobs needs them,” involving possessive form and subject–verb agreement. The conclusion’s comma spacing and the missing space after “languages,” also need attention. Practise checking sentence completeness, agreement and articles, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
