Student answer (Band 5.5)

In a country where you can speak a foreign language can cause serious social as well as practical problems. I agree with this statement to a great extent and I will discuss the main social and practical problems.

The first social problem is loss of communication and confidence. You can not communicate with others because they did not know about the language which you speak. In this way, you reamain lonely and low confidence beacuse communication develops the confidence in the body but if you can not communicate with each other you remain lonely.

The second social problem is that you are always in stress. The chronic stress of communication kills your mind as well as your body. You stayed always in anxiety and stress and your mental health is disturbed by it. It is also cause cultural misunderstanding, because the people only have the basic skill to communicate and they did not understand idioms, political issue and all other difficult things. You can only communicate for food and clothes etc.

The practical issue is that, you can not understand the list of taxes, documents and all other things. You also can not understand the notices, you can not bargain with landlords, you never understand the rules and also you never understand the doctors prescription. It will also cause employment issue and technical jobs problem. You can not know the legal notices and it also cause problem in a bus stand where you can not understand about the buses.

To sum up, I pen down by saying that, foreign language caused many problems so people also know about the national language.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree to a great extent, and you address both social and practical problems, so the response covers the main parts of the task. The examples of difficulty understanding tax documents, doctors’ prescriptions, legal notices and buses are relevant and help explain practical consequences. The social points about isolation and stress are also pertinent, but they are less fully developed: for example, explain how limited language ability leads to loneliness or give a specific situation showing cultural misunderstanding. The conclusion restates your view, though the suggestion that people should know the national language is not fully connected to the argument. Develop each main idea with clearer explanation or an example to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for social and practical problems, and a conclusion. This makes the overall arrangement understandable, and signposts such as “The first social problem” and “The practical issue” help readers follow the topic. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive or unclear. In the second social paragraph, stress, anxiety, mental health and cultural misunderstanding are listed without a clear explanation of how the ideas connect. Repeated “you can not” constructions also make the practical paragraph feel like a list. Group related examples and use a wider range of linking and referencing expressions to show relationships between causes and consequences more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “chronic stress,” “cultural misunderstanding,” “legal notices” and “employment.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both social and practical consequences. However, the range is limited in places, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “low confidence,” “kills your mind,” “employment issue,” and “bargain with landlords.” Spelling errors such as “remain,” “because” and “prescription” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise, natural phrases and avoid repeating broad terms such as “problem” and “understand.” This would make your meaning clearer and give the argument a more appropriate academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure in “because communication develops the confidence in the body but if you can not communicate…”. The main ideas are generally recoverable, but the range of sentence patterns is limited and errors recur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “they did not know” does not fit the general present meaning, “It is also cause” lacks the correct verb form, and “foreign language caused many problems” uses an unsuitable tense. Some sentences also join several clauses without clear punctuation, particularly in the practical-problems paragraph. Practise accurate present-tense statements and build longer sentences with controlled clauses and punctuation.
