Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that residing in a foreign nation where one is required to communicate in a non-native tongue can lead to significant societal challenges as well as fuctional inconveniences. I completely agree with this viewpoint because language barrier not only hinder a person's everyday survival but also lead to emotinal isolation.

To begin with, facing language barrier in a country creates immediate practical difficulties in daily life. Without knowing the local language, performing even the simplest task become an overwhelming struggle. Moreover, this can make hard to survive in that country. For instance, without the language many difficulties appear as problems to communicate while shopping or doing grocery. In addition, difficulties while reading or learning government laws or rules.

Furthermore, not knowing the native language of a country can lead to severe social isolations. When individuals are unable to do meaningfull conservations with the locals, they often find it impossible to integrate into community. Individuals are unable to make friends to share thier thoughts or something important and can't celebrate festivals or special occassions without knowing each other. It can lead to social distances and it make individuals stressed or depressed. For example, immigrants goes to japan and feels stressed because they are unable to speak japanesse or to communicate in japanese with the country's people. This all happens due to the communication gap.

In conclusion, I believe that living in a foriegn place without knowing local tongue poses major hurdles. It not only disrupts everday practical task but also cuts a person off from social life, making survival highly challenging.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I completely agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both practical and social problems, with relevant examples such as difficulties shopping or understanding government rules, and immigrants in Japan feeling stressed when they cannot communicate. This covers the task well. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the shopping example is brief, and the reference to festivals and special occasions does not show specifically how language prevents participation. To strengthen the response further, develop each example with a clear consequence or a more concrete situation, and explain the link between language difficulty and the social or practical problem.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for practical and social difficulties, and a conclusion that restates your view. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore” help readers follow the two main points. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “In addition, difficulties while reading or learning government laws or rules” is a fragment and does not connect smoothly to the preceding example. The social paragraph also moves quickly from making friends to festivals, then to stress and depression. Use complete, linked sentences and make the relationship between each supporting point explicit to create a more fluent progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “societal challenges,” “practical difficulties,” “integrate into community,” and “communication gap.” These choices show an effort to express the topic beyond basic language. However, inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable and sometimes distract the reader: “fuctional,” “emotinal,” “meaningfull,” and “japanesse” are examples. Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “doing grocery,” “meaningfull conservations,” and “social distances.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions would help you communicate the same ideas naturally and demonstrate more consistent control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “When individuals are unable to do…,” and your main ideas remain understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur in agreement, articles, and sentence completeness. For example, “language barrier… hinder” needs a plural subject or a singular verb, while “performing… task become” has a similar agreement problem. “In addition, difficulties while reading…” is not a complete sentence, and “it make individuals stressed” also needs subject–verb agreement. Review articles and plural forms as well, and check each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts easier to read.
