Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart illustrates the way people lived in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011 by comparing the proportions of those who lived in their own place versus those who rented their housing.
Overall, with the passing of time, more people started to own their places to live rather than paying for the rented accommodations.
From 1918 to 1961, there were more people paying for their housing as compared to those who actually lived as the owner of their place. In 1918, there lived almost 80% of households in rented place, while the rest stayed at their own accommodation. During 1939, 70% of people lived in rent, and this remained same till 14 years later. The declining trend for people paying rent for their housings continued for years after that and leveled with those owning their place in 1971.
After 1971, the proportion of people who owned their accommodation started to grow, going from 60% in 1981 to slightly under 70% in 2001. Finally, 2011 saw a slight fall for such households as compared to 2001, however, the proportion still remained over 60%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected relevant data points to support your description, such as the crossover point in 1971 and the peak in 2001. The information is accurate according to the chart provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise terminology for data reporting; for example, instead of saying 'there lived almost 80% of households', it is more accurate to state 'approximately 80% of households lived in rented accommodation'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements for a high-level summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information chronologically. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'From 1918 to 1961', and 'After 1971', which help guide the reader. However, the cohesion is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother. For instance, the phrase 'this remained same till 14 years later' could be better integrated into the preceding sentence to improve the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'proportions of those who lived in their own place' and 'declining trend' are appropriate for a task of this nature. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'paying for the rented accommodations' (which is slightly wordy) and 'leveled with' (which could be more precisely phrased as 'equaled' or 'reached parity'). While the vocabulary is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to data trends would elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'there lived almost 80% of households' (which should be 'almost 80% of households lived') and 'lived in rent' (which should be 'lived in rented accommodation'). Additionally, 'remained same' requires an article: 'remained the same'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help you achieve greater accuracy.
