Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the key trends for both owned and rented accommodation. You successfully highlight the inverse relationship between the two categories and provide relevant data points to support your observations. However, there is a factual error in the opening paragraph where you state '1018' instead of '1918'. Additionally, while the main trends are clear, the analysis could be improved by grouping the data more effectively to highlight the most significant shifts, such as the crossover point or the period of most rapid change. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'At a glance', 'In contrast', and 'On the other hand' helps to guide the reader through the data. However, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the sentence 'While Rental accommodation was at its peak' is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Improving the connection between these clauses would enhance the overall coherence. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'resurged', 'downward trend', and 'dramatically'. These choices allow for a clear description of the trends. There are some minor issues with capitalization, such as the unnecessary capitalization of 'Rental' in the middle of sentences. While the range is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. The most notable is the sentence fragment 'While Rental accommodation was at its peak', which lacks a main clause. There are also issues with tense consistency and punctuation, such as the typo '1018' for '1918'. Despite these errors, the grammatical control is generally sufficient to communicate the data without causing significant confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on ensuring that all sentences are complete and that punctuation is used consistently.
