Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar graph displays information about the proportions of households in the houses that are owned and rented by the people in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Overall, it can be seen that the things that people who owned the accommodation purchased more as time passed. However, the percentage of the households of the people who stayed on rent decreased throughout the period.

While looking at the things owned by the owner of the property, it has been observed that in 1918, 22% of the goods were owned by the owner. After two decades, this rose to 32% and remained stable for a decade and a half. Additionally, it constantly increased till 2001, reaching the top of 69%. Then eventually, 8% decreased in 2011.

On the other hand, almost 76% of the goods were owned by the people who live on rents in 1918. However, this graph decreased in two decades by 8% and remained constant for a decade and a half. Then it experienced a drastic decline till 2001, falling to the low of 31%, which then recovered by 5% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview. You have selected key data points to support your description, such as the peak in 2001 and the initial figures from 1918. However, the task achievement is slightly hampered by the inaccurate use of terminology. You refer to the data as 'goods' and 'things owned by the owner,' which misinterprets the subject matter (housing tenure). While the trends are accurately reported, the lack of precision in describing the actual categories (owned vs. rented accommodation) prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you clearly define the subject of the data in your opening and maintain that clarity throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two categories. You use cohesive devices such as 'While looking at,' 'Additionally,' and 'On the other hand' to transition between ideas. However, some of the referencing is slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of information is easy to follow, which meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. Strengthening the variety of linking words would further enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, but there are significant issues with word choice. Referring to housing percentages as 'goods' is inaccurate and confusing for the reader. Additionally, phrases like 'things that people who owned the accommodation purchased' are wordy and imprecise. You demonstrate an ability to use some descriptive language ('drastic decline,' 'remained constant'), but the misuse of key terms limits your score. To reach a higher band, focus on using precise terminology related to the topic, such as 'tenure,' 'proportion,' 'percentage,' and 'accommodation,' rather than generic terms like 'things' or 'goods.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the percentage of the households of the people who stayed on rent' (which is clunky) and '8% decreased in 2011' (which should be 'decreased by 8%'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your report. You have attempted some complex structures, but they are occasionally slightly awkward. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more natural phrasing will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
