Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the task. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is quite superficial. You mention the 1971 intersection and the general trends for 1981–2011, but you lack specific data points (percentages) to support your claims, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. Furthermore, the overview is repetitive and does not clearly highlight the most significant changes over the entire period. To improve, ensure you include specific figures from the chart and provide a more comprehensive summary of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally misused, such as 'Last but not least' which is not appropriate for a data report. The progression of ideas is logical, but the transitions between sentences feel disjointed. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the summary of the trends is vague. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words that connect the data points more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence starters.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'household', 'owned', and 'rented' without variation. There are also issues with word formation and collocation, such as 'remains same constant' and 'up and down'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'surpassed', or 'accounted for'. Additionally, ensure you use accurate terminology for the subject matter, such as 'home ownership rates' instead of just 'household owned'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The bar graph demonstrate', 'household owned... had remains'), missing articles ('in 1971 year'), and awkward phrasing ('the proportion of household owned and rented had remains same constant'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Practice combining simple sentences into complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
