Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the downward trend for rented accommodation and the upward trend for owned homes. However, the overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the overall trends. The data selection is generally accurate, such as noting the 1971 crossover point and the 1918 starting figures. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, simply listing data points rather than synthesising the information to highlight significant comparisons. To improve, ensure you include a clear overview paragraph that captures the main trends and avoid listing every single year, focusing instead on the most significant changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into a single block of text, which makes it difficult to read. Paragraphing is essential in IELTS writing to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. While there is a basic logical progression from the start of the period to the end, the lack of paragraphing and the limited use of cohesive devices (such as 'furthermore', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently') make the flow feel disjointed. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the discussion of rented and owned accommodation is abrupt. Using clear paragraph breaks and a wider range of linking words would significantly improve the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'ratio', 'accommodations', and 'houses'. Some word choices are inaccurate, such as 'it is very difference on the graph' (should be 'it is very evident') and 'arised' (should be 'rose' or 'increased'). The spelling of 'appartments' is incorrect. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'witnessed a decline', or 'surpassed', and ensure accurate spelling throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. There are issues with sentence structure, such as run-on sentences and missing capital letters at the start of sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around numbers and symbols. Examples of errors include 'there were very less residencies' (should be 'there were far fewer residences') and 'it reached till the 50 %' (should be 'it reached 50%'). The range of grammatical structures is limited, relying mostly on simple sentences. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent sentence punctuation will help improve your score in this criterion.
