Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the chart well, identifying the starting points, the crossover point in 1971, and the final figures in 2011. The overview is integrated into the body paragraphs rather than being a distinct summary, which is a minor weakness. While the data is generally accurate, the description of the 1990s as a 'drastic change' is slightly imprecise given the data points provided. However, the key trends are clearly highlighted, and the response successfully compares the two categories throughout the period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear chronological progression. Paragraphing is used to separate different time periods, which helps the reader follow the narrative. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1918', 'After that', and 'When we looked at' are used, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, and the flow of information is consistent, allowing the reader to track the changes in housing trends without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'residential units', and 'accommodation'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of phrases like 'owned the housing' and 'renting the houses'. There are minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'those were given housing for lease', which sounds slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more varied synonyms and precise collocations related to statistical reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'there was the highest percentage of households who rented the housing approximately 78%' (missing preposition/awkward phrasing) and 'those renting were 69%' (missing subject). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly disrupt the flow. The student demonstrates a reasonable grasp of grammar, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher score.
