Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar graph demonstrates information regarding the percentage of families who were residing in places bought and rented by them in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, from 1918 to 1961, people who rented accommodations were dominant, whereas preference to own their houses was greater between 1981 and 2011. Interestingly, individuals with owned and rented housing were equivalent in the middle of the period.
Households who purchased their own accommodation were only around a quarter at the beginning of the period, while renting a house was at its peak at that time with just below 80%. In 1939, people with owned and rented places to live were approximately a third and around two-thirds respectively, which remained almost similar by 1953. In the next eight years, the trend of buying rose to nearly 40%, but renting declined to just below 60%. Individuals with both purchasing and renting became the same after a decade.
Turning towards the rest of the period, in 1981, two-fifths of the population rented residences and 20% more than that bought them. Similar trends were observed in 1991 and 2001, in which buying an accommodation was more popular, with around 70% buying and around half of them renting. At the end of the period, approximately double the number of people bought a residing place compared to those who rented one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers the main features of the chart, providing a clear overview and supporting details. You successfully identified the shift in trends between 1918 and 2011. However, some data points are slightly inaccurate or vague, such as the claim that renting was 'just below 80%' in 1918, when the chart shows it closer to 75-77%. Additionally, the description of the 1991 and 2001 data is slightly confusing; stating 'around 70% buying and around half of them renting' is mathematically inconsistent with the provided chart. More precise reporting of the figures would elevate the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological progression. Cohesive devices such as 'Turning towards the rest of the period' and 'In the next eight years' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different time periods. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of data could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'residing', 'accommodations', and 'dominant'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'residing place' and 'individuals with owned and rented housing', which could be expressed more idiomatically. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and comparative structures would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'people with owned and rented places to live were approximately a third', which is slightly awkward. You also have some minor issues with preposition usage and article placement. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater precision in subject-verb agreement and noun phrase construction.
