Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the trends for both owned and rented accommodation over the period. However, the reporting of data is often inaccurate or confusing, such as the mention of '1931' which does not appear on the chart, and the description of figures like '30.1 something digits'. While the overall trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the data points hinders the clarity of the summary. To improve, ensure that the data extracted from the graph is accurate and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant shifts, such as the crossover point where ownership overtook renting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the chronological progression. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'Post hoc' and 'Eventually', which do not fit the context of a data report. The flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed due to awkward phrasing and grammatical errors. While there is a clear attempt to structure the information chronologically, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive nature of the sentence structures limit the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There is a reliance on basic descriptors like 'inclined', 'declined', and 'remained constant', and some word choices are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'owned shelters' and 'something digits'. The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but the frequent errors in collocation and word choice occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the specific data being described. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise verbs for trends, such as 'surpassed', 'fluctuated', or 'stabilised', and ensure collocations are accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('residence was falls'), tense usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are awkward or contain fragments, such as 'rented households houses declined that was less than 70%'. While the meaning is generally discernible, the errors are persistent and affect the fluency of the text. The range of structures is limited, with most sentences following a simple pattern. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors in verb tense and pluralisation.
