Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided chart illustrates the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, the proportion of households living in owned accommodation climbed steadily between 1918 and 2011, whereas the percentage of those living in rented accommodation declined sharply over the same period.
Regarding owner-occupied accommodation, it is recorded to be highest in 2011, meanwhile the figures bottomed out in 1918. However, the numbers of rental accommodation were at peak in the same year. In 1971, the ratio of both the accommodations were balanced and then varied afterwards. From 1971 onwards, there was a significant rise in the proportion of people living in owner-occupied homes. In 1918, the count of owned ones was just above 20% and it rose up to approximately 65% till 2011. In addition, the numbers of rented accommodation fell considerably, starting from nearly 80% to 35%. The dramatic rise and fall was clearly witnessed in the graph.
The accommodation in England and Wales varied throughout the period, from 1918 to 2011. The unstable ratio was clearly observed during the timeline.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You highlighted the key turning point in 1971 and correctly contrasted the inverse relationship between owned and rented accommodation. However, the response could be improved by including more specific data points for the intermediate years (e.g., 1939 or 1991) to better support the description of the trends. The final paragraph is somewhat redundant, as it repeats information already covered in the overview and body paragraphs without adding new analytical value. Focusing on a more detailed comparison of the specific percentages at key intervals would elevate the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'regarding', and 'from 1971 onwards' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the final paragraph lacks a clear purpose, appearing disconnected from the rest of the analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that every sentence contributes new information and that the progression of ideas flows more naturally between paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear, though the use of 'the numbers of' could be more varied to improve flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'climbed steadily', 'declined sharply', and 'balanced'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'the numbers of rental accommodation' (should be 'the proportion of rented accommodation') and 'the count of owned ones' (which is slightly informal). While you successfully convey the meaning, incorporating more precise academic vocabulary—such as 'fluctuated', 'surpassed', or 'predominant'—would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' to create contrast. Most sentences are clear, and errors do not impede communication. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the ratio of both the accommodations were balanced' (should be 'was balanced') and 'it rose up to approximately 65% till 2011' (should be 'until 2011'). Additionally, 'the numbers of rental accommodation were at peak' requires an article ('at a peak'). Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
