Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to clearly distinguish between the two categories (owned vs. rented). The description of the trends is confusing and often inaccurate when compared to the provided chart. For example, the statement that rented accommodation had the highest percentage in 1918 is correct, but the subsequent analysis of the trends is disjointed and lacks a clear overview of the significant shift that occurred over the period. The final paragraph attempts to provide reasons for the trends, which is not required for an Academic Task 1 and distracts from the data reporting. To improve, focus on identifying the key trends and reporting them accurately without adding external speculation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The sentences within the paragraphs often lack clear connections, making it difficult to follow the analysis. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes incorrectly, such as the awkward punctuation and phrasing in the third paragraph ('In year 1918 has the lowest...'). The referencing is also unclear, as it is often difficult to determine which category (owned or rented) the writer is referring to in specific sentences. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each sentence clearly relates to the previous one would significantly enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Words like 'percentage', 'stable', and 'decreased' are used frequently, often in ways that are not grammatically correct or contextually appropriate. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'payed their rent' (should be 'paid') and 'rent house' (should be 'rented accommodation'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied terminology related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', 'peaked', or 'a significant decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('In year 1918 has the lowest'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures. Punctuation is also problematic, with unnecessary commas and fragmented sentences. While there is an attempt to use complex ideas, the execution is often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofreading for common errors like article usage and verb tense consistency.
