Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In England and Wales, the percentage of households in owned and accommodation is demonstrated in the chart below. The data is shown between 1918 and 2011.
From the graphical representation we can observe that there is propositional relation between these trends. In early 1900, the rented accommodation in households is comparatively higher than owned accommodation in households. Similarly, in 1939 and 1953 it declines and level out. Then after, in 1961 rented accommodation lower down below 60% whereas owned accommodation inline slightly than previous year. Occasionally, both subjects remain constant in 1976 exactly at 50%.
Moreover, the owned accommodation finally bypasses the rental accommodation reaching 60%. In the following two years, it approaches in its peak around 78%. In fiscal year, the owned accommodation decreased slightly within the range of 75% as rental accommodation capture approximately 46%.
Overall, from the information display in the bar graph we can elaborate the contrasting trends between the accommodations in owned households and rented households throughout the period of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the shift from rented to owned accommodation. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and contains inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, stating that trends 'level out' in 1939 and 1953 is not supported by the visual evidence, and the description of the final years is confusing. The overview is present but lacks a clear synthesis of the most significant trends. To improve, focus on identifying the key turning points and comparing the two categories more precisely rather than listing dates without clear analytical context.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between sentences is often mechanical or awkward, such as 'Then after' and 'In fiscal year'. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes applied incorrectly or in a way that obscures the logical progression of the argument. The transition between the introduction, body, and conclusion is functional, but the internal logic within the body paragraphs needs to be more refined to ensure that the relationship between the data points is clearly communicated to the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'propositional relation', 'lower down', and 'inline slightly'. The use of 'fiscal year' is also inappropriate in this context as the chart refers to calendar years. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or precise terminology limits the score. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and comparative adjectives would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'percentage of households in owned and accommodation' (missing noun), 'rented accommodation... lower down' (incorrect verb usage), and 'approaches in its peak' (incorrect preposition). While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage would be a beneficial area for improvement.
