Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. Furthermore, the content is incomplete; it only covers the data for 1918 and makes an incorrect, confusing reference to 1939. It fails to provide a comprehensive summary of the trends over the entire period up to 2011. The main features are not adequately highlighted, and the analysis is fragmented and stops abruptly. To improve, you must ensure you cover the entire timeframe provided in the chart and provide a clear overview of the major trends, such as the inversion of the two categories over time.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is too short to demonstrate a logical progression of ideas. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the transition between the introduction and the body is weak. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and sometimes repetitive way, such as 'on the other hand' and 'as for the remaining'. The lack of a concluding summary or a cohesive narrative makes the text feel disjointed. To improve, focus on linking sentences more naturally and ensuring that each paragraph contributes to a clear, structured overview of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'the number of the houses' and 'the households in rented accommodation' are used repeatedly. There are also inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'frequency of the households' instead of 'percentage of households'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'witnessed a decline', or 'surpassed'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement is often incorrect, for example, 'The graph demonstrate' (should be 'demonstrates') and 'the chart illustrate' (should be 'illustrates'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in UK and Wales' (should be 'in the UK and Wales'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, and the attempt at a complex structure in the second paragraph is marred by awkward phrasing. Improving basic accuracy and sentence construction is essential.
