Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given chart illustrates about the percentage of rented and owned households in England and Wales over a vast time span of 93 years starting from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, we can see a gradual decrease in the percentage of rented accomodation while the number of owned houses kept rising over the time.

Starting from 1918, we can see only 22% of people had their own accomodation while 78% of households had rented spaces. From the year 1939 to 1953, the numbers remained the same where 32% of households had own accomodation and majority of them, i.e 68% were living in rented houses.

In 1971, the number of households in rented and owned accomodation were exactly the same giving a percentage of 50% each. In 1981, we can see that the number of owned houses surpassed the number of rented of rented ones for the first time during the survey. At the end of the survey in 2011, 62% of the households had their own accomodation while 38% of them were living in rented accomodations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart well, identifying the overall trends of owned and rented accommodation. You successfully highlighted the key turning point in 1971 and the final figures in 2011. However, the task achievement could be improved by providing more precise data points for the intermediate years (e.g., 1981 or 2001) to better illustrate the progression. While the summary is accurate, it lacks a slightly more detailed analysis of the rate of change between the specific periods mentioned. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological progression. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Starting from', 'In 1971', and 'At the end of the survey' helps the reader follow the timeline easily. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific data points. To reach a higher band, ensure that transitions between sentences are more varied, as some connections feel slightly repetitive. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends, such as 'gradual decrease', 'surpassed', and 'vast time span'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'accomodation' (should be 'accommodation'), which occur consistently throughout the text. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks a wider range of less common lexical items or more sophisticated collocations that would demonstrate a higher level of precision. Focusing on accurate spelling and expanding your repertoire of trend-related verbs and adverbs will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'illustrates about' (should be 'illustrates'), 'the number of owned houses kept rising over the time' (should be 'over time'), and 'rented of rented ones'. These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also be beneficial.
