IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph represents the % of household in owned and rented accommodation' in England and Wales. The data is present for years from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it showcases the trends that occur through all these years. Gradually, there have been increase in the household in owned accommodation along these years and decrease for the rented accommodation. Exceptionally, in 1971, the percentage for both are the same.

The given data outlines the number of changes that have occurred in a specific duration of time. Categorically speaking, household in owned accommodation were exactly a quarter in the starting but had increased nearly three quarters into former years. On the other side, household in rented accommodation has gradually decreased from well over three quarters to nearly a third. The data suggests that the ratio of changes is fluctuating through all these years, and is steady in the year 1971.

We can say that, people in the duration of years from 1918 to 2011, had preferred 'owned accommodation' over rented ones to stay in.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, identifying the overall trends and the point of intersection in 1971. However, the report lacks precision. For instance, stating that owned accommodation was 'exactly a quarter' and increased to 'nearly three quarters' is a bit vague and lacks specific data points from the chart to support the description. While the main trends are identified, the response would benefit from including more specific figures (e.g., percentages for 1918 or 2011) to better illustrate the changes. The overview is clear, but the supporting details could be more data-driven to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'Categorically speaking' or 'On the other side'. The referencing is sometimes imprecise, for example, 'the former years' is not a standard way to refer to the end of a time period. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the ratio of changes is fluctuating' (the data shows a steady trend, not a fluctuation) and 'in the former years' (which is not idiomatic in this context). The phrase 'the data is present for years' is also slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology related to trends, such as 'upward trajectory', 'plateaued', or 'significant shift', and ensure that collocations are used correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there have been increase' (should be 'an increase'), 'household in owned accommodation' (should be plural 'households'), and 'percentage for both are the same' (should be 'is the same'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally acceptable, but the control over subject-verb agreement and article usage needs improvement to achieve greater accuracy.
