Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the changes of housing in families: either self-owned or renting across England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, the rented accommodation dropped dramatically from 1918 to 2011, contrasting with households in owning, which it surged among these years.
At the start of 1918, renting occupied the highest market, having over 75% of households, but following a declining trend, where it intersected with the uprising owning accommodation in 1971; each consisted of half of the total household percentage. After 1971, rented accommodation continued decreasing: hitting a low in 2001, with only 32% of households.
On the other hand, owned accommodation started off with 22% of households in 1918, with slightly upward fluctuations up to 1953, then thrived significantly thereafter to the summit of near 70% in 2001.
During 2011, the households in owning dropped with the rise of renting reversely, approximately 63% and 38% respectively. The changes in housing between 20th and 21st centuries demonstrated an increase in economic status of the UK, with more families being able to purchase houses started from 1981 than renting.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered the key features, such as the intersection point in 1971 and the peak/trough figures. However, the final paragraph includes an analytical comment about the 'economic status of the UK' which is not supported by the data provided in the chart. In IELTS Task 1, you should strictly report the data rather than speculating on external causes. Additionally, ensure your data points are precise; for instance, you mentioned 2001 as the peak for owned accommodation, but the chart shows the peak occurred slightly earlier. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological progression. You used cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'After 1971', and 'respectively' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different trends. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from the start of the period to the end is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'surged', 'fluctuations', and 'thrived'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'changes of housing in families' which is slightly unnatural, and 'uprising owning accommodation', which is not the correct collocation. However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for a report of this nature and shows a good attempt at using varied descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of participial phrases ('having over 75% of households') and relative clauses. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'households in owning' (should be 'owner-occupied households') and 'the rise of renting reversely'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there are occasional minor errors in sentence construction. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows the reader to follow the data without difficulty. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy would help improve this score.
