IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the change in the proportion of housing in families: either self-owned or renting across England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Overall, the rented accommodation dropped dramatically in the 20th century, contrast with the households in owning, which surged among these years. In the 21st century, this trend is projected to reverse.

At the start of 1918, renting occupied the highest market, having over 75% of households, but following a declining trend, where it intersected with the rising owning accommodation in 1971; each consisted of half of the total household percentage. After 1971, the rented accommodation continued decreasing: hitting a low in 2001, with only 32% of households.

On the other hand, the owned accommodation started off with 22% of households in 1918, with slightly upward fluctuations up to 1953, then thrived significantly thereafter to the peak of near 70% in 2001.

During 2011, the percentage of households in owning dropped with the rise of proportion in renting reversely - approximately 63% and 38% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the crossover point in 1971 and the peak of home ownership in 2001. The overview is clear and highlights the key shift in the 21st century. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, you mentioned 1953, which is not explicitly marked on the chart, and the 2011 figures could be described more accurately as 'approximately 63% and 37%' rather than 38%. Overall, the report is well-structured and provides a clear summary of the provided data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'At the start of', 'On the other hand', and 'During 2011' to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general trend to specific time periods. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the two categories is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'surged', 'thrived significantly', and 'proportion of housing' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'renting occupied the highest market' and 'households in owning', which sound slightly unnatural. However, these do not impede communication. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations related to data trends, such as 'the majority of the market' or 'home ownership rates'. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for some flexibility in expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'having over 75% of households, but following a declining trend, where it intersected...'. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'contrast with the households in owning' (which should be 'in contrast to') and 'the rise of proportion in renting reversely', these errors do not cause confusion. Your control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally good. To achieve a higher score, aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure that prepositions and word order are consistently accurate.
