Student answer (Band 5.0)
The tabular data delineates the number of households owning and renting accommodation in England between 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the household accommodation in rented has the highest percentage from starting about 75% but it decreases with the number of time. Meanwhile, the household owned accommodation portrays the opposite trend and has the lowest percentage in the year 1918 but it's percentage increases from about 25% to 70 %. The unit of description is percentage.
However, in 1918, the percentage of household owned accommodation is very high as compared to others but it decreases with the passage of time and stop decreasing at about 30 % in the year 2011. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main features of the chart, but it suffers from significant factual inaccuracies. You have confused the trends for owned and rented accommodation, stating that owned accommodation had the 'lowest percentage in 1918' when the chart shows it was the minority, and then incorrectly claiming it was 'very high' in the same paragraph. Furthermore, the final paragraph contains contradictory information, stating that the percentages 'stay fluctuated' and 'show no any change,' which is factually incorrect based on the provided data. To improve, ensure you carefully verify the data points against the visual information before writing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by the factual errors and confusing transitions. While you use some cohesive devices like 'Overall,' 'Meanwhile,' and 'However,' their usage is sometimes mechanical or misapplied, such as using 'However' to introduce a paragraph that contradicts the previous one in a way that confuses the reader. The referencing is also unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the mention of 'other years' and 'no any change' lacks a clear connection to the data presented. Improving the logical flow between sentences is essential for a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You use basic terms like 'highest percentage' and 'lowest percentage' repeatedly. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'number of time' instead of 'passage of time' or 'over time,' and 'stay fluctuated,' which is grammatically incorrect. To improve, try to use more varied reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'proportion,' 'figure,' 'witnessed,' or 'experienced,' and ensure that your collocations are natural and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the household accommodation in rented has the highest percentage,' 'it's percentage increases' (confusing 'its' with 'it is'), and 'show no any change.' There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like possessives would be beneficial.
