IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given vertical graph depicts the ratio of owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between the time period of 1918 and 2011. The data is calibrated in percentage.

Overall it is crystal clear that owned accommodation suffered a continuous decline while rented accommodation rose consistently across the given time period in England and Wales.

At a fleeting glance it is evident that both the variations were at their peak and lowest with owned living space at about 22% and rented living space at about 78% in 1918 before opposing itself in 1939 followed by exact same data in 1953 with less than 70% of rented accommodation and more than 30% of owned accommodation. In addition the ratio of rented household reduced to approximately 59% with owned household at about 41%.

Moving further, the proportion of both variations was similar at 50% in the year of 1971. However the situation changed completely after 1971 as owned housing showed growth of 10% and rented housing showed dip of 10%. Moreover, the data became almost same in 1991 and 2001 with about owned living quarters at less than 70% and rented living quarters at more than 30%. Furthermore, in 2011 owned quarters were reduced to about 65% and rented ones at about 35%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a general overview and attempts to report main features. However, the analysis of the data is inaccurate. For instance, you state that owned accommodation 'suffered a continuous decline,' which contradicts the graph showing a significant rise from 1918 to the early 2000s. Furthermore, the description of the data points is confusing and often factually incorrect, such as claiming the data was 'opposing itself' in 1939. To reach a higher band, you must accurately interpret the trends and figures presented in the visual data rather than misrepresenting the overall trajectory of the housing market.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or confusing. Phrases like 'at a fleeting glance' and 'before opposing itself' do not contribute to a logical flow of information. While there is an attempt to sequence the data chronologically, the lack of clarity in the comparisons makes the progression feel disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'calibrated,' 'proportion,' and 'variations.' However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'the data became almost same' and 'owned living quarters.' These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary is used in the correct context to describe statistical trends accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the ratio of rented household reduced' (should be 'households') and 'the data became almost same' (should be 'the same'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas in several places. While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would help improve the overall accuracy of your sentences.
