Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given vertical column graph depicts the information about the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. The data has been calibrated into percentage.

Overall, it is crystal clear that the highest ratio of households was in rented accommodation whereas lowest percentage was for households in owned accommodation according to the given period of time.

At a fleeting glance, approximately 77% of the households were in rented accommodation while only 22% ratio was in owned houses during the year 1918. Moreover, it was followed in year 1939 and 1953 and the ratio recorded for both years was approximately 69%. Surprisingly, owned accommodation in both years were similar of 31%. In 1961, households for rented accommodation was 59% however in owned houses the percentile incline to 40%.

Moving further, the percentage was gradually similar in both owned and rented accommodation in year 1971. Whereas, from the year 1981 to 2011 the percentage did not surpass by 40% in households for the rented accommodation. Respectively, a frequent change was seen for households in owned chambers, which climb to 60% . In year 1991, this ratio jump to 68%, while it slowly increases to 69% in year 2001. In year 2011, households in owned settlements was approximately 64%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified the key trends, such as the inversion of the two categories over time. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; stating that rented accommodation was the highest ratio for the 'given period of time' is misleading because owned accommodation became the dominant category from the 1970s onwards. To improve, ensure your overview captures the shift in trends rather than just the initial state. The data reporting is generally accurate, though some specific figures could be presented more clearly to highlight the cross-over point more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Moving further', and 'Whereas' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'it was followed in year 1939'. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the flow between the description of the 1961 data and the 1971 data could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'calibrated', 'incline', and 'surpass'. However, there are some instances of awkward word choices or non-standard collocations, such as 'owned chambers' and 'owned settlements', which are not appropriate for describing housing statistics. Additionally, 'percentile' is used incorrectly here; 'percentage' would be the correct term. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, more precise and natural academic collocations would elevate the score. Focus on using domain-specific terminology accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'owned accommodation in both years were similar' (subject-verb agreement) and 'the percentage did not surpass by 40%' (incorrect preposition usage). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the ratio recorded for both years was approximately 69%'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing statistical trends.
