Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the overall trends for both owned and rented accommodation. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the claim that rented accommodation was 77% in 1918 is not clearly supported by the visual data, and the description of the 1953 and 1961 data is confusing and lacks precision. While the overview is present, the body paragraphs struggle to clearly convey the specific data points, leading to a lack of clarity in the summary. To improve, focus on selecting key years (start, end, and major turning points) and reporting them with greater accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. Phrases like 'At a fleeting glance' and 'Moving further' are used, but the internal logic within paragraphs is weak. The transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the description of fluctuations is difficult to follow. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that cohesive devices are used to link ideas logically, rather than just acting as fillers, would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is limited and contains several inaccuracies. Words like 'caliberated', 'percentille', and 'estimately' are used incorrectly or are non-standard in this context. There is also a reliance on repetitive phrasing, such as 'ratio of households' and 'household accommodation'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision in word choice and the presence of spelling errors (e.g., 'continously', 'wales') hinder the overall quality. To reach a higher band, you should work on using more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', and 'steadily declined', while ensuring correct spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'bar represent', 'ratio... remain'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing that impacts readability. For instance, 'in the first year percentage of households... sharply incline estimately 77%' is grammatically incomplete and confusing. While the errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding the general message, they are frequent enough to be distracting. Focusing on basic sentence construction, correct verb tenses, and proper article usage will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
