Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the initial percentages in 1918 and the final figures in 2011. However, the report lacks a clear overview, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. The data presentation is somewhat mechanical, listing figures year-by-year rather than synthesizing trends. Additionally, there are inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, the claim that percentages were equal in 1991 or 2001 is not supported by the visual data provided. To improve, you should group information logically and provide a summary of the overall trends at the beginning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is presented as a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow. There is a lack of paragraphing to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices are very limited and repetitive, relying heavily on 'and' and 'the households in...'. The progression of ideas is disjointed, as the transition between different years is abrupt. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks and a wider variety of linking words such as 'whereas', 'subsequently', 'in contrast', and 'meanwhile' to connect your ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite repetitive, with the phrase 'households in owned/rented accommodation' being used almost every sentence. There is little attempt to use synonyms or more sophisticated terminology related to data description (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'surpassed'). Some word choices are awkward, such as 'households in owned are slowly buying there own house'. Spelling errors, such as 'there' instead of 'their', also occur. To reach a higher band, focus on using a broader range of vocabulary to describe trends and avoid repeating the same noun phrases throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is often incorrect, such as 'The chart illustrate' (should be 'illustrates') and 'households... was' (should be 'were'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. The lack of complex sentence structures limits the range, and the persistent errors in basic grammar occasionally impede the flow of information. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and incorporating complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions.
