Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart illustrate that the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. The households in owned accommodation were 20-23% in 1918. In 1918 households in rented accommodation were 76%. 1939 and 1953 the households in owned accommodation percentage were same which was 31%. And households in rented accommodation was also same which were 68%.

1961 in England the households in owned accommodation were 40% and the rented accommodation was 59%. 1971 the households in owned accommodation and households in rented accommodation both percentage were same which was 50% but in the year of 1961 and 1971 the households in owned are slowly buying their own house as compared to the rented house.

In 1991 the households in owned accommodation percentage was 60% and the households in rented accommodation was 40%. Households in owned substantial increase compared to the households in rented house which showed a significant decrease. In 1991 or 2001 the households in owned and households in rented percentage was equal. And the last one households in owned have percentage was 63% and households in rented was 35%.

In my opinion, at the beginning of the period, most people lived in rented accommodation. However, after a few years, more people began to prefer owning their own homes. Basically, owning a house has many benefits, such as having no rent to pay and fewer difficulties or restrictions related to accommodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the chart, but the analysis is inconsistent and contains factual inaccuracies. For example, you state that in 1991 and 2001 the percentages were equal, which is not supported by the data. Furthermore, the inclusion of a personal opinion paragraph is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, as the task requires an objective summary of the data provided. While you identify the general trend of rising home ownership, the lack of precision in reporting the figures and the inclusion of irrelevant personal commentary prevent a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often confusing. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the abrupt transition 'And the last one households in owned have percentage was 63%'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical flow between sentences is hindered by repetitive sentence structures. While the overall arrangement is coherent enough to follow, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the awkward phrasing between data points limit the effectiveness of the communication.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on the same phrases like 'households in owned accommodation' and 'households in rented accommodation'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'households in owned are slowly buying their own house' and 'the last one households in owned have percentage was 63%'. These errors occasionally make the text difficult to follow. To improve, you should aim to use a wider variety of synonyms and more precise terminology to describe trends and data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies on a limited range of simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The chart illustrate', 'percentage were same') and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the handling of dates and percentages. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors and the lack of complex sentence structures indicate a limited control over grammar, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
