Student answer (Band 6.5)
The chart compares the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, the proportion of owner-occupied households declined significantly, while the figure for rented accommodation increased substantially, with the two proportions converging towards the end of the period.
Regarding owner-occupied households, the figure stood at around 77% in 1918, the highest proportion recorded. However, it declined considerably, falling to approximately 35% by 2011. In addition, it reached an equivalent point with rented accommodation in 1971, standing at 50%.
Moving to rented accommodation, the figure reached its highest point in 2001, standing at just under 70%. Meanwhile, the proportion of households in rented accommodation increased gradually from 1918 to 2011, rising from approximately 20% to around 63%, respectively. This figure was considerably higher than the proportion of owner-occupied households at the same time, which stood at approximately 30%. By 2011, however, the gap between the two categories had narrowed, with rented accommodation accounting for around 63% compared with 35% for owner-occupied households.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and selects relevant data points to support the description. However, there is a significant factual error in the interpretation of the chart. You stated that owner-occupied households declined from 77% in 1918 to 35% in 2011, whereas the chart shows the opposite trend (starting low and ending high). Additionally, the claim that rented accommodation reached its highest point in 2001 at 70% is inaccurate based on the visual data provided. While the structure is logical, the misinterpretation of the data significantly impacts the accuracy of the task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by category. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'Moving to', and 'Meanwhile' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main categories. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, although the internal consistency is undermined by the data inaccuracies mentioned in the Task Achievement section. Overall, the text is easy to follow and demonstrates a good level of coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'proportion of owner-occupied households', 'converging towards the end of the period', and 'narrowed' are used accurately and appropriately for an academic report. There is some repetition of the word 'figure', but it does not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common items, such as 'substantially' and 'considerably', which adds precision to your descriptions. The vocabulary is generally well-suited to the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'while the figure for rented accommodation increased substantially'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. Most sentences are error-free, demonstrating good control over complex structures. While the range is not exceptionally wide, it is sufficient to communicate the information clearly and accurately. The grammatical control is consistent throughout the piece.
