Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the initial dominance of rented accommodation and the subsequent shift toward home ownership. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear overview. While you mention specific years like 1918, 1971, and 2001, the description of the trends is repetitive. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of the overall trend in the introduction or conclusion and avoid simply listing data points. The comparison between the two categories is present, but it could be more analytical by highlighting the 'crossover' point more effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into a single paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. IELTS Task 1 responses should be structured with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs to group related information. Cohesive devices are limited and somewhat mechanical; for example, you use 'on the contrary' repeatedly, which is not always the most natural choice for comparing data. The progression of ideas is present but lacks the logical flow that would be achieved through better paragraphing and a wider variety of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You frequently repeat phrases like 'the people who owned their own household' and 'rented accommodation'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'household's number is increased' instead of 'the percentage of owned households increased'. To reach a higher band, try to use more varied terminology such as 'home ownership rates', 'proportion', 'fluctuated', or 'witnessed a significant rise'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect preposition usage ('in between the year of 1918 to 2011'), subject-verb agreement ('the bar graph show's'), and awkward phrasing ('the people who live rented household'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and unnecessary apostrophes. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors occur throughout the text and prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
