Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main trends and provides data points from the chart. However, the overview is weak; it merely states that the percentage 'fluctuates', which is inaccurate as the trends are largely directional (owned accommodation rose significantly while rented fell). The report lacks a clear summary of the overall shift over the period. While key years are mentioned, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing data points rather than synthesizing the information to highlight the most significant changes, such as the crossover point in 1971.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized chronologically, which provides a basic logical flow. However, the use of cohesive devices is repetitive and mechanical. Phrases like 'In 1939', 'In 1953', and 'In 1961' are used at the start of almost every sentence, creating a list-like structure rather than a cohesive paragraph. There is a lack of variety in linking words, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Paragraphing is also insufficient, as the entire response is essentially one long block of data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student frequently uses the same phrases, such as 'household in owned accommodation' and 'rented accommodation', throughout the text. There is little attempt to use synonyms or more sophisticated descriptive language to vary the report. While the terminology is accurate enough to convey the basic meaning, the lack of lexical range prevents the response from achieving a higher score. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is insufficient for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and pluralization (e.g., 'The chart illustrate', 'household in owned accommodation were', 'It tend to fluctuates'). Sentence structures are simple and repetitive, relying heavily on 'In [year], [subject] was [number]'. There is a lack of complex sentence structures or varied grammatical forms. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of basic errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage is noticeable throughout the text.
