Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, as it is only 83 words long. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While the student identifies the main trends—the decline in rented accommodation and the rise in owned homes—the analysis is incomplete. The response stops abruptly mid-sentence and fails to provide a comprehensive overview or sufficient detail regarding the data points throughout the period. To improve, the student must ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed and provide a full, developed summary that meets the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure due to its incomplete nature. While there is an attempt at an introduction and an overview, the body paragraphs are underdeveloped and fragmented. Cohesive devices are used in a very basic manner, such as 'However on other hand', which is grammatically awkward and mechanically applied. The lack of a concluding paragraph and the abrupt ending significantly hinder the logical flow of the information. To improve, the student should focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, logical progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'percentage', 'number', and 'homes'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'compare the data in percentage' instead of 'compares the percentage of'. The phrase 'throughout a century ranges from' is also imprecise. To reach a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a more varied range of vocabulary, including synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease', and use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors that affect clarity. There are subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'The bar chart compare' (should be 'compares') and 'owned accommodation has rose' (should be 'has risen'). Punctuation is also problematic, with a comma used instead of a full stop at the end of the first sentence. The sentence structures are simple, and the attempt at a complex structure is marred by errors. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct verb tenses, and proper sentence punctuation.
