Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the percentage of people who owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. Overall, the rented accommodation decreased subsequently over the years. Whereas households in owned accommodation increased substantially throughout the period.

In 1918, the proportion of households in owned accommodation comprised 20%. Meanwhile Rented accommodation recorded at almost 80%, making the highest all the time. On the other hand, residents with owned house accounted for 70%, the highest percentage recorded for owned accommodation, in 2001. At same year, rented houses remained the smallest at almost 30%.

The people with rented houses gradually declined at 35% approximately, followed by a slight increase in 2011. On the contrary, the percentage of households in owned accommodation represented a little fluctuation in early and end years of the chart, leading from 22% to 63%. In 1971, the percentage of both households remained at the same i.e., 50%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main trends and identifies the key intersection point in 1971. However, the reporting of data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For instance, stating that rented accommodation was 'the highest all the time' is imprecise, and the claim that owned accommodation reached 70% in 2001 contradicts the visual data, which shows it peaking earlier. While the overview is present, the lack of precision in data reporting prevents a higher score. The response would benefit from a more careful selection of data points to support the general trends described.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a clear overview. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'On the contrary', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of the second body paragraph is somewhat disjointed, making it difficult to follow the chronological development of the trends. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'fluctuation', and 'substantially'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'making the highest all the time' and 'remained at the same i.e., 50%'. These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the precision of the report. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more sophisticated academic collocations and ensuring that descriptive phrases are grammatically accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'rented accommodation decreased subsequently' (where 'subsequently' is misused) and 'At same year' (missing article). Additionally, 'the percentage of both households remained at the same' is grammatically incomplete. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on article usage, correct prepositional phrases, and ensuring that comparative structures are fully formed.
