Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar graph illustrates the proportion of families owned and rented accommodation in England and wales over a period 94-year period from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it is readily apparent that the percentage of owned houses recorded a steady rise throughout the period. While, at the same time households' renting ratio experienced a consistent decrease.

To begin with, in 1918, the ratio of owning accommodation recorded the least with just over 20%, although its share rose significantly every year. Notably, in late 1971, both owned and rented ration reached at the same position with 50%. And after that in 2001, the ratio reached a peak of just below 70%, before declining gradually in 2011 at approximately 64%.

By contrast, the proportion of rented houses presented the highest contribution in 1918 at around 77%. in 2001, it recorded the lowest percentage with just above 30%. Over the decade, it increased to just under 40%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the steady rise in home ownership and the inverse trend for renting. The data is accurately reported, and you made relevant comparisons, such as the point of intersection in 1971. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with precision; for instance, the term 'every year' is an overgeneralization as the data is provided at intervals, not annually. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Notably', and 'By contrast' to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring the overview is distinct. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the final two sentences could be smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'steady rise', and 'consistent decrease'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'recorded the least' (should be 'was at its lowest') and 'reached at the same position' (should be 'reached the same level'). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. Expanding your range to include more precise collocations related to data trends would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'families owned and rented accommodation' (should be 'families in owned and rented accommodation') and 'in 2011 at approximately 64%' (should be 'in 2011 at approximately 64%'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'in 2001' starting a sentence with a lowercase letter. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
