Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar graph elucidates the information about the proportion of accommodation of houses rented and owned in England and Wales between the year 1918 and 2011.
Taking a general overview, the highest ratio of houses rented was in the year 1918, whereas the highest owned accommodation was in 2001 for England and Wales. The year of 1971, the ratio was equivalent of both the accommodations.
It is pellucid that the rented accommodation was the highest in the start of the year 1918, illustrating the ration of almost 80%. The rate of houses rented in 1939 and 1953 was almost the same which was approximately 68%. The later percentage of the rented accommodation declined gradually over the years, reaching its lowest in the year 2001, which was a little over 30%. After a decade in 2011, the proportion of rented house slightly increased to approximately 35%.
Moving further, the rate of owned accommodation was the lowest in the beginning of the year 1918 which was a little more than than 20%. Later in the year 1939 and 1953, the ratio of owned houses increased over 30%. In addition to that, the percentage of rented house started increasing which reached its apex in 2001 which was almost 70%. Later after a decade, the number of owned house in England and Wales dwindled to approximately 65%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You highlighted the key turning point in 1971 and correctly contrasted the inverse relationship between rented and owned accommodation. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting. For instance, you mention that the percentage of 'rented house' started increasing in the final paragraph, but the data refers to 'owned' accommodation. Additionally, the term 'apex' is used to describe the 2001 figure for owned homes, which is accurate, but the overall analysis could be strengthened by more precise comparisons between the two categories at specific intervals rather than just listing the figures for each.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two categories. You use cohesive devices such as 'Taking a general overview', 'It is pellucid that', and 'Moving further' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the confusion between 'rented' and 'owned' in the final paragraph slightly disrupts the flow of information. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'elucidates', 'pellucid', 'dwindled', and 'apex'. While these show an attempt to use less common items, some word choices are slightly unnatural or misused, such as 'ratio' when 'proportion' or 'percentage' would be more accurate. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'the start of the year 1918' instead of 'the beginning of the period'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'the ratio was equivalent of both the accommodations' should be 'the ratio was equivalent for both types of accommodation'. You also have some minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'the rate of houses rented in 1939 and 1953 was almost the same which was approximately 68%'. The punctuation is generally sound, and the errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex sentence structures would be required for a higher band.
