Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the initial dominance of rented accommodation and the subsequent shift toward home ownership. However, the overview is poorly constructed and lacks clarity, failing to highlight the most significant trends effectively. The description of the data is somewhat mechanical, listing figures without sufficient synthesis or comparison. While the key data points are present, the analysis is hampered by inaccurate reporting of years (e.g., mentioning 1963 when the chart shows 1953) and a lack of clear, logical grouping of the information. To improve, focus on identifying the 'crossover' point more clearly and grouping the data into distinct periods of change.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often repetitive and sometimes inaccurate. Phrases like 'These rate' and 'this rate' are used frequently, which makes the writing feel mechanical. The logical progression between sentences is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as in the overview where the comparison between owned and rented accommodation is confusingly stated. The transition between the description of rented and owned households is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'meanwhile') would help create a smoother flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'rate', 'higher', 'lower', and 'increased'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'accomodation' and 'consiquently', and word choice issues, such as 'this rare' instead of 'this rate'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate precision or flexibility. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'declined', 'surpassed', or 'proportion', and ensure that spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'These rate was', 'household in rented was') and pluralisation. Sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors that can cause confusion. Punctuation is mostly functional, but the misuse of basic grammar patterns significantly impacts the clarity of the writing. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and ensuring that plural nouns are used correctly with their corresponding verbs. Practising the correct use of articles and prepositions will also help reduce the frequency of errors.
