Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main trends, such as the decline in rented accommodation and the rise in home ownership. However, the report lacks precision and fails to clearly identify key data points or specific years beyond general references. The description of the trends is somewhat vague, using terms like 'huge' or 'very low' rather than accurately interpreting the percentages provided in the chart. Furthermore, the overview is not clearly defined, and the information is presented in a disjointed manner, making it difficult for the reader to grasp the overall picture of the changes between 1918 and 2011.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear paragraph structure, which makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices like 'moreover', 'further more', and 'therefore', they are often used incorrectly or in a way that does not logically connect the sentences. The lack of proper punctuation, such as missing full stops and capitalization, further disrupts the flow of the text. The information is not organized into a logical sequence, and the referencing of data points is often unclear, leading to a mechanical and repetitive feel throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'huge', 'very low', and 'show a rise' throughout the text. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language necessary for an Academic Task 1 response. Additionally, there are several errors in word choice and form, such as 'apartment which is own and rent' instead of 'households which are owned or rented'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, but it does not demonstrate the range or precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede readability. There is a consistent lack of subject-verb agreement, such as 'this table illustrate' instead of 'this table illustrates'. Punctuation is largely absent, with run-on sentences and a lack of capital letters at the beginning of sentences. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. Complex structures are attempted but are generally inaccurate, such as 'at the year of 1971 it comes to same level'. These persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction significantly affect the clarity of the writing.
