Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided bar graph illustrates the percentage of families living in owned and rented houses in England and Wales between 1998 and 2011.

Overall, the percentage of household living in owned accommodation skyrocketed throughout the years while the percentage of families living in rented houses have slumped.

Detailed analysis of the graph showcases the drastic increase in the percentage of families owning their own houses in England and Wales as there were only 22% households who owned their own accommodation in 1918 but it had been risen to 69% until 2001 where it was peaked but it started to after 2001 decrease reaching 67% in 2011.

On the other hand, the percentage of households living in rented accommodations in England and Wales decreased dramatically from 68% in 1918 where it was maximum, to 31% at the end of 2001 but unlike owned accommodations, started to increase after 2001 reaching 38% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your summary. You correctly noted the inverse relationship between owned and rented accommodation and highlighted the significant turning point in 2001. However, there is a factual error in your introduction: you stated the period as 1998–2011, whereas the prompt specifies 1918–2011. This is a significant oversight regarding the data provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key information, including the timeframe, is accurately transcribed from the prompt. Otherwise, the overview is clear and the key features are well-selected.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'unlike' to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two categories. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the general trend to specific data points. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences, such as the one describing the 2001 peak, are slightly cluttered and could be broken down for better flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-description task, using terms like 'skyrocketed', 'slumped', 'drastic increase', and 'dramatically'. These choices effectively convey the intensity of the trends. There are a few minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'it had been risen' (should be 'it had risen') and 'where it was maximum' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and flexibility throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that slightly hinder the flow. For instance, 'it had been risen' is an incorrect passive construction, and 'it started to after 2001 decrease' has awkward word order. Additionally, 'there were only 22% households who owned' should be 'there were only 22% of households who owned'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct placement of adverbs.
