Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main trends and makes relevant comparisons, but there are significant inaccuracies in the interpretation of the data. For instance, you state that owned accommodation fell from 76% to 69% between 1918 and 1939, whereas the chart shows a rise. Furthermore, you confuse the categories, stating that 'houses owned by landlords' fell, when the chart tracks 'owned' vs 'rented' households. While you identify the key features (the overall decline in rented and rise in owned), the misinterpretation of the data points significantly impacts the accuracy of the summary. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the labels and figures before writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a logical attempt to sequence the information. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In contrast'. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the sentence 'On the other hand, the rent facility, it can be observed that...' is clunky and lacks smooth integration. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the data points. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help the essay read more fluently.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on repetitive phrases like 'the trend showed' and 'the houses represented'. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'rent facilities' instead of 'rented accommodation' and 'steadily fell' used incorrectly to describe a rise. Some phrasing is non-standard, such as 'reached by 38% extra'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', and ensure that your collocations are natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('the proportion of houses that has owner'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction ('the houses represented as a minimal growth'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence structure and proofreading for basic agreement errors would be highly beneficial.
