IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given bar graph provides information about the percentage of owned and rented accommodation for living for England and Wales countries between 1918 and 2011 year. It is very evident that a constant flow for both types of accommodation can be observed.

The proportion of the owned houses have been increasing throughout years, reaching its peak in year 2001 at 69%. Furthermore, decrement in the number of owned households can be observed for year 2011, dropping to roughly 62%. On the other hand, for the rented households, constant decrement can be observed, as the highest number achieved was in the year 1918, which drastically reduced to 30% in the year 2001.

Through careful examination, a pattern can be observed for both the categories, as the rented household faces a constant decrement, whereas, for the owned household a constant increment is evident. However, both the categories had an equal contribution of 50% in the year 1971.

Therefore, it can be concluded that, there is a shift in preference for housing accommodation among the citizens of England and Wales, which creates a positive impact, illustrating improvement in the financial health of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying the key trends for both owned and rented accommodation. You successfully highlighted the crossover point in 1971 and the peak/decline periods. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data interpretation; for instance, stating that the highest number of rented households was in 1918 is correct, but the description of the trends could be more precise. Additionally, the final paragraph includes an interpretation regarding 'financial health' which is subjective and not supported by the provided data, moving away from the objective reporting required in Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for trends, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'However' are used to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally clear, moving from general trends to specific data points. While the structure is sound, the flow between sentences could be improved by varying the cohesive devices further, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends, using terms like 'decrement', 'increment', and 'proportion'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'constant flow' is not the most accurate way to describe a trend, and 'England and Wales countries' is redundant. The phrase 'constant decrement' is repeated, which limits the lexical variety. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that collocations are natural and contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The proportion of the owned houses have been increasing' should be 'has been increasing') and minor punctuation or phrasing errors ('in year 2001' should be 'in the year 2001'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted complex structures, but they lack the consistent accuracy required for a higher band. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
