Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided bar graph illustrates the proportions of families living in owned and rented accommodations, across England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Generally speaking there was an overall downward trend in the percentage of households in rental accommodations while the proprtion of families living in owned properties experienced an upward growth.

At the onset of period, about 77% of the british households lived in rental housing, this figure dropped to approximately 68% in 1939 and remained largely the same until 1953. After that, it experienced a steady fall, reaching almost 31% in 1991. However, it rebounded slightly to roughly 35% in 2011.

For privately owned accommodations, the proportion was less than a quarter in 1918. During the subsequent 21 years, it grew to more than 30%. After remaining unchanged until 1953, it rose by almost 10% in 1961 and reached to 50% in 1971. Over the subsequent two decades, it continuously followed a linear growth pattern and accounted for nearly 68% of the total accommodations in 1991. Nevertheless, after rising minimally in 2001, it dropped to less than 65% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and providing relevant data points for both categories. Your overview clearly highlights the inverse relationship between owned and rented accommodation, which is a key requirement for a high band score. You have selected and reported the main features effectively, such as the initial percentages and the significant shifts in 1991 and 2011. The information is accurate and well-supported by the data provided in the chart. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently highlight the most significant comparisons rather than just listing data chronologically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two distinct categories. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'After that', 'However', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through the timeline. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two trends. While the structure is solid, the flow could be further enhanced by using more varied linking phrases to connect the two paragraphs, perhaps by explicitly contrasting the trends within the body paragraphs rather than keeping them entirely separate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'upward growth', 'steady fall', and 'linear growth pattern' are used effectively. There is an awareness of style, and you avoid repetitive language. However, there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'reached to 50%', where the preposition 'to' is unnecessary after 'reached'. Additionally, 'proprtion' is a spelling error. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are always grammatically sound in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'At the onset of period' (missing an article: 'the period') and 'reached to 50%'. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or more advanced relative clauses, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
