Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart displays the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 and 2011.

Overall, residents who live in a rented accommodation were the highest in recent ages, whereas the residents who live in their owned place were very few in 1918. Moreover, the proportion also became similar in 1971 but in 2011 rented residents remained fewer and the people who owned their house rises.

Starting from 1918, there were only about 22% of residents who had their own place however, the renters then were about 78% which is also the highest proportion. Then, the renters declined and the homeowners growled steadily and turned to the same proportion of 50% by 1971. Thereafter, the renters dropped steadily and

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. Furthermore, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly in the middle of a sentence. While you identified the main trends—the inverse relationship between owned and rented accommodation and the crossover point in 1971—the lack of completion means you have not fully reported the data or provided a comprehensive summary. To improve, ensure you complete your analysis of the final years (1971–2011) and provide a clear, concise overview that covers the entire period. The current response is too brief to adequately cover all parts of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows some attempt at logical organization, using an introductory paragraph and a body paragraph. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the flow of information. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Starting from', but the transition between the overview and the body paragraph is somewhat mechanical. Because the text is incomplete, the overall progression is severely hindered. To improve, focus on structuring your response into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that ideas are linked smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. You used some relevant terms like 'proportion', 'households', and 'accommodation', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, such as 'growled' (which is incorrect in this context; 'grew' or 'increased' would be appropriate) and 'rented residents' (which is slightly awkward). The range of vocabulary is limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to themselves. To improve, try to use more precise verbs for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'surpassed', or 'remained stable', and avoid informal or incorrect word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect clarity. For example, 'residents who live in a rented accommodation were the highest in recent ages' is grammatically awkward, and 'the people who owned their house rises' shows a tense inconsistency. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete sentence at the end is a major issue. To improve, focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses when describing historical data (past simple is usually best) and ensure subject-verb agreement. Practice constructing complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions to improve your range.
