Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to accurately report the main features. The overview is confusing and contradicts the data provided in the chart (e.g., stating rented accommodation created an upward trend while owning decreased, which is inaccurate). Furthermore, the body paragraphs contain significant factual errors regarding the percentages and trends. For instance, the claim that owning houses was 75% in 1918 and reduced to 32% in 1991 is not supported by the visual data. The analysis lacks precision, and the misinterpretation of the trends prevents a clear summary of the information. To improve, focus on identifying the starting and ending points accurately and describing the overall shift between the two categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression is hindered by inaccurate data reporting and confusing transitions. While cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'In 1918', and 'Moreover' are used, they are often applied to sentences that contain contradictory or unclear information. The referencing is sometimes mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear due to the errors in the content. To achieve a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the information presented flows logically from one point to the next without contradicting previous statements.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices and incorrect collocations, such as 'percentage method', 'owning the household accommodation', and 'very highest'. The student relies on basic descriptors like 'big difference' and 'huge difference' rather than using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends (e.g., 'significant decline' or 'substantial increase'). Some phrasing is unnatural, which occasionally makes the meaning difficult to follow. Expanding your vocabulary to include specific trend-related verbs and adjectives will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the message. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'rented accommodation create', 'it reduce'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures. The use of articles is also inconsistent (e.g., 'The demand of the owning houses'). While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, these are often poorly constructed and contain errors that impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and using appropriate tense consistency when describing historical data.
