Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Bar chart illustrated, there is a proportion of households owned or rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011, and in each year proportion of rented accommodation households increased. But, in owned accommodation households proportion decreased.
Bar chart represented the proportion of two different categories in, which it consisted of households rented and owned by people in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011, and it contained 93 years record.
In each year, the most households were rented in 1918, and its proportion was about 78%, and on the other hand, mainly households were owned in 2001, and proportion was about 69%, which was an incredible result.
In each year, there was a downward proportion of households rented except in 2011, and its proportion was about 36%, but, as compared to households owned there was an upgrade in every year except in 2011, and its proportion was about 64%, and in one year both were at 50% proportion in 1971.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features, such as the 1971 crossover point and the general trends. However, the analysis is inaccurate in several places. For example, you state that rented accommodation increased in each year, which contradicts the data showing a clear downward trend. Furthermore, the description of the 2001 figures is confusing, and the claim that there was an 'upgrade' in owned accommodation except in 2011 is factually incorrect based on the provided chart. The overview is missing, and the reporting of data is inconsistent, which prevents a clear summary of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The ideas within paragraphs are often repetitive, such as the repeated mention of 'in each year' at the start of multiple sentences. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and sometimes incorrect way, such as the misuse of 'on the other hand' and 'but' to connect unrelated or contradictory ideas. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the relationship between the data points and the trends being described.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'proportion', 'households', and 'rented/owned'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'incredible result' (which is inappropriate for a factual report) and 'upgrade' to describe a statistical increase. The phrasing is often awkward, which hinders the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, you should focus on using a wider range of synonyms and more precise mathematical language to describe trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammar is characterized by frequent errors that occasionally impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as 'Bar chart illustrated, there is a proportion...' and '...in which it consisted of households rented and owned by people...'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While there is an attempt to use complex sentence structures, they are often faulty, leading to confusion. The control over basic grammar is not yet consistent enough to support a higher band score.
