The table chart provides information about the percentage of households owned and rented housing presented data in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the main features are identified, the analysis is somewhat superficial and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the statement that owned accommodation recorded the highest values throughout the period is factually incorrect, as the chart shows rented accommodation was higher until the 1970s. The overview is also slightly confusing, as it mentions a 'fluctuation trend' for rented housing, which is not clearly supported by the data. To improve, ensure all data points are accurately interpreted and the summary provides a clearer, more precise overview of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'Meanwhile' and 'Looking at the details' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which category is being discussed. Improving the variety and precision of linking words would help create a more seamless progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'gradually significant' and 'followed climbed trend', which are not standard collocations. The range is somewhat limited, and the student relies on repetitive phrasing. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'upward trajectory' or 'steady decline', and ensure that words are used in their correct grammatical context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the percentage of households owned and rented housing presented data' and 'the percentage of owned accommodation in starting period was lowest'. There are also issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions would be beneficial.
