The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart compares the percentages of households living in owned or rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, the proportion of households in owned accomodation became common over the period and reached a peak in 2001 before declining slightly. However, the percentage of households in rented accomodation followed the opposite pattern and fell to its lowest in 2001 before rising marginally in 2011.

The proportion of households rose from 23% in 1918 to 32% in 1939 and remained unchanged in 1953. The figure then climbed to 41% in 1961 and 50% in 1971, equal to the proportion of rented accomodation. The proportion continued to increase from 60% in 1981 to 67% in 1991 before rising slightly to around 68% in 2001. Afterward figure dropped marginally to 64% in 2011.

The proportion of households in rented accomodation followed the opposite trend. The proportion fell from 77% in 1918 to 68% in 1939 and stayed constant in 1953. The figure then dropped to around 59% in 1961 to 50% in 1971. This downward trend continued, with the proportion reaching 40% in 1981, 33% in 1991 and 32% in 2001 before rising slightly to 36% in 2011.
