Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the chart, identifying the overall shift from rented to owned accommodation between 1918 and 2011. Specific data points are cited, such as the 78% figure for rented housing in 1918 and the crossover point in 1971. However, there are notable inaccuracies and omissions in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that in 1953 'households remained same', whereas the chart shows changes, and incorrectly refers to 'expenses in owned accommodation' towards the end. The overview is overly simplistic, and the data selection lacks complete precision across all decades. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall summary statement. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and repetitive sentence structures ('In 1918... In 1939... In 1953...'). Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or mechanically applied, such as the frequent use of 'and reached upto'. Referencing and logical linking between sentences are occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the narrative becomes confused. Paragraphing is present but under-developed. These features align with a Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple terms like 'percentage', 'households', 'accommodation', 'increased', and 'decreased'. There are several noticeable lexical errors, such as 'used to high', 'decresed', 'upto' (often written as one word incorrectly), 'accommo dation' (spacing error), and 'expensis'. The student attempts less common vocabulary by discussing trends, but inaccuracies in word choice and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader and impede precise communication. This sits comfortably at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although, households in owned accommodation increased and reached upto 32%.' However, control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors including missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'households in rented accommodation used to about 78%', 'households remained same', 'accommodations become equal'). Punctuation is also erratic, with missing full stops and spaces within words (e.g., 'accommo dation'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 criteria.
