Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarize the provided chart showing the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. However, the task achievement is significantly limited by omissions and inaccurate data reporting. The student misinterprets several key statistics and fails to mention England, referring exclusively to Wales throughout the response. Furthermore, the selection of main features lacks a clear overview or holistic summary of the trends, relying instead on a disjointed listing of specific years. While some data points are mentioned, such as the 1918 figures, the overall coverage of the entire time span up to 2011 is incomplete. These shortcomings place the response firmly at Band 4.0 according to the task achievement descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization of the response is extremely basic and lacks clear overall progression. Although the student attempts to use transition words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', these cohesive devices are used mechanically and do not successfully structure the data presentation. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are fragmented and consist of isolated, disjointed sentences rather than a coherent flow of ideas. Pronoun referencing and logical linking between sentences are frequently absent, causing the reader to struggle in following the chronological development of the data. Consequently, the overall arrangement fails to achieve clear coherence, corresponding to Band 4.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is very basic, repetitive, and restricted to simple terms such as 'percentage', 'households', 'owned', and 'rented'. There are also frequent spelling errors, such as 'accomodation' (repeated multiple times) and 'percantage'. The student lacks the lexical range required to describe statistical trends flexibly, omitting useful vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'fluctuate', 'decline', or 'surge'. Because the vocabulary is repetitive and contains errors that strain the reader's understanding, the lexical resource is rated at Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical structures employed in the response are very limited and heavily repetitive. Nearly all sentences are simple or poorly constructed complex structures that feature fundamental errors, such as missing verbs ('The chart illustrate that...', 'In, starting years...') and incorrect prepositions. Tense usage is also confused when referring to historical data from a past time period. There are frequent grammatical errors that distort meaning and cause difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for Band 4.0.
