Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the percentage of individuals living in the owned and rented accomodations in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, the figure for households living in rented accomodations decreased gradually. In contrast, the percentage for owned accomodations rose considerably with 2001 having the highest percentage of households in owned accomodations.

In 1918, the percentage of people living in owned accomodations was lowest and increased gradually from about 20% to 50% until 1971 and equalled the figure for individuals living in rented houses, while the proportion of households in rented accomodation was biggest in 1918 resting just below 80% after which it declined gradually and became 50% in 1971.

After 1971, both portions followed their old trends with proportion of owned accomodations surpassing the rented ones between 1971 and 1981.The owned accomodation number edged up between 1991 and 2001 before falling a little from 2001 to 2011, while the portion of rented accomodations stabled a little from 1991 to 2001 and rose marginally from 32% in 2001 and 36% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by selecting, reporting, and comparing the main features of the chart regarding owned and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011. The response presents a clear overview outlining the main trends, such as the decline in rented housing and the increase in homeownership, followed by specific supporting details broken down by time periods. Key data points, such as the convergence around 1971 and the peak of homeownership in 2001, are correctly highlighted and compared. The information is accurately reported based on the provided visual data, meeting all requirements for a well-structured Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized logically with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that chronologically detail the trends. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct periods and ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'while', and 'After 1971' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although some transitional linking could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of information moves logically from general patterns to specific data points without causing confusion for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing trends and statistical data, using terms like 'percentage', 'decreased gradually', 'rose considerably', and 'surpassing'. However, there is a recurring spelling error with the word 'accommodation' (spelled 'accomodation' throughout) and some slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'portions followed their old trends' and 'stabled a little'. Despite these lexical inaccuracies, the range of vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main trends clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures (e.g., 'the percentage of people living in owned accomodations was lowest and increased gradually...'). There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'gradually. In contrast') and occasional awkward phrasing like 'the owned accomodation number' instead of 'the figure for owned accommodation'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the information easily.
