Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, noting the overall trends of owned and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011, and attempts some comparisons such as in 1971 when the proportions were equal. However, the student struggles significantly with precise data reporting and makes several contradictory or factually incorrect statements based on the visual data. For instance, the text claims that 'more than 70 percent households were rented by people in the year of 1918' (whereas renting was actually around 77 percent, but the phrasing is clumsy) and states that 'renting had no significance at first year.' Ideas are somewhat repetitive and lack the precise data selection required for a Band 6. Overall, the task is addressed only partially due to vague and sometimes inaccurate reporting of data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into several short paragraphs, but the overall organization and logical progression are weak. The introduction is followed by a series of repetitive and disconnected summary statements. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the transition 'Moreover, renting had no significance at first year' and repetitive sentence openings like 'The number of homes...' and 'There was a rise...'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression between sentences often feels disjointed. While there is some attempt to structure the response, the lack of a clear overall progression and mechanical cohesion place this firmly at a Band 4.5 to 5.0 level, rounded here to 5.0 based on basic paragraphing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing words like 'homes', 'renting', 'owned', 'number', and 'ratio' throughout the text. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'household owning and renting accomodation' instead of 'households in owned and rented accommodation', 'household owned was increases', and 'accomodated for renting'. Spelling errors like 'accomodation' are also present. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas, resulting in a score of 5.0 where errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of these attempts contain severe grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. Examples include 'The percentages of houses varies differently', 'The ratio of household owned was increases gradually', and 'The number of houses used for both purpose was same with 50 ratio in 1971.' Subject-verb agreement errors ('percentages... varies', 'ratio... was increases'), incorrect verb forms ('was same with 50 ratio'), and punctuation issues are frequent. These errors often cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning, reflecting the key descriptors for Band 5.
