Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main trends shown in the chart regarding owned and rented accommodation from 1918 to 2011. You successfully identify the overall upward trend for owned housing and the downward trend for rented housing, and mention the point of equality around 1971. However, some of the data details are inaccurate or confusingly expressed, such as claiming that in 2011 there was a downward trend for owning houses or struggling to clearly articulate the specific percentages across the timeline. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of precision and some unsupported statements prevent this from being a fully developed overview. Therefore, it satisfies the requirements for a Band 5.5, as it addresses the task partially with some key data points missing or unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organised into four paragraphs, following an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the categories. There are some cohesive devices used, such as 'Overall', 'In 1918', and 'while', which help guide the reader through the data. However, progression is sometimes hindered by clunky transitions and confusing sentence structures, especially in the body paragraphs where ideas run together (e.g., 'which slightly decreased in 1939 and 1953 and both making up about 68% afterward'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow which year or category a pronoun or phrase refers to. This level of organisation and mechanical cohesion corresponds to a Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms directly from the prompt or simple synonyms like 'percentage', 'households', 'accommodation', 'trend', 'increased', and 'decreased'. There are several noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'for the owning of households', 'owning households', and 'euality' (equality). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, these frequent inaccuracies and the narrow range of less common lexical items place this response firmly in the Band 5.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences and grammatical confusion. For instance, sentences like 'In 1918, 78% of households were rented which slightly decreased in 1939 and 1953 and both making up about 68% afterward...' lack proper finite verbs and clause boundaries. Punctuation is also weak, with missing commas and capitalization errors ('wales form', 'euality'). Frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and obscure the precise meaning of the data, which is characteristic of a Band 5.0 performance.
