Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. Key data points, such as the initial percentages in 1918 and the peak figures in later years, are correctly identified and contrasted. For example, the student notes that rented accommodation started highest at around 13% (though misstating the initial figure slightly, the trend is captured) and owned accommodation rose sharply to reach approximately 69% in 2001. While some minor inaccuracies exist in reading the precise data values, the overall trends are clearly reported and well-supported with figures. This performance aligns comfortably with the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0, and is best placed at Band 6.5 due to minor inaccuracies in data reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organization. The student uses paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'In general', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'after that slighlty increased' and 'after that from 1961 dramatically increased'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but the flow between sentences inside the body paragraphs could be smoother. These issues reflect the characteristics of Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data trends such as 'pecentge', 'households', 'accommodation', 'rose sharply', 'declined', and 'dramatically increased'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('moderatly', 'bacame', 'slighlty', 'acommodation') and some awkward word choices or collocations. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main features of the chart. The occasional spelling slips and restricted flexibility in less common lexical items place this response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as comparison clauses ('as compared to the rented households accommodation') and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of households... were highest') and prepositional errors ('in 1918 to 2011' instead of 'from 1918 to 2011'). Punctuation is also sparse, leading to run-on structures. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the control over complex structures, warranting a Band 5.5.
